Over a decade ago, when we built this house, I wanted a pantry with plenty of room for home-canned goods. This month, I finally met my long-time goal of filling the space to capacity.
I started canning early in my married life. At first I just did jellies and jams and other low-acid foods that could be preserved with the water-bath method. But when we moved back to the farm, I decided to up my game with pressure canning. Now I can meats and vegetables, soups and stews. And this year, I managed at last to fill all the shelves I’d allotted all those years ago. That salsa on the middle shelf was actually made by my husband, who found the recipe online and said, “I’ll make it if you’ll can it.” That sounded like a good deal to me. The tomatoes are from our garden, and so are the carrots in the split pea soup. Aren’t those shelf labels nifty? I LOVE labeling stuff, and these little clip-ons are easy to change out or move around as needed.
Now it’s time to move on to another household goal…like finishing the Craftsman trim throughout the house!
